The report on match fixing in Indian cricket has just been released. The Justice Chandrachud Report had been commissioned by the Board for Control of Cricket in India. However, according to our usually uninformed sources, this version varies to quite an extent from the original draft. That one was written up by a stenographer after an evening of checking out the pubs in Mumbai, so some of the factual discrepancies that may have arisen were later excised. However, given Jaal's commitment to free and frank journalism, we are publishing some extracts from the it as it was.
What It Says: BCCI is a non-profit autonomous body, its objects and functions being regulated by its Memorandum and Regulations.
What It Originally Said: BCCI is a profit-making autocratic body, its objectives and functionaries being regulated by Megalomania and Rapaciousness.
What It Says: Considering that the aforesaid allegations of "betting" and "match-fixing" by Indian cricketers and/or by management are calculated to cause grave prejudice to the future of Indian cricket and damage its image and the image of the country, BCCI considered it expedient to have a thorough enquiry made into the said allegations.
What It Also Said: As long as it was understood that the image of cricket suffered to sheer lack of talent or provision of training and facilities or investing in any positive development of cricket in the country, the BCCI was unconcerned.
What It Says Sachin Tendulkar Said: A batsman, who can deliberately get out, would need to be a super technician.
What It Also Said He Said: We have no batsmen of that calibre in national or domestic cricket.
What It Says Nayan Mongia Said: I think it crazy that any player will bet to lose. I have never heard even a whisper of it from any teammate.
What It Said He Also Said: We always presume that we will lose, so who in his right mind would place bets on that possibility.
What It Said Sunil Gavaskar Said: Some people are firing shots in a dark room to hit someone. But there is no one in the room. So the shots only damage the room. That room is Indian cricket. Today, it is a dark room because we are not in a winning streak. When we win, there are lights here, lights there and lights everywhere.
What It Said He Also Said: Unfortunately, given the power situation in the country, it is unlikely that those lights will ever come on.
What It Says Ajit Wadekar Said: Some undesirable persons have invaded the cricket field and have ruined it by playing politics.
What It Said He Also Said: But then you cannot run the game without the BCCI and the players.
What It Says Manoj Prabhakar Said: I have no evidence to prove my statements. There will be my word against their word. The prosecution or the suit will ruin me totally. These are the reasons why, initially, I did not speak out for three years and now I cannot disclose their names of the culprits.
What It Said He Also Said: However, if my career as a politician ever takes off, Ill disclose the names since then I won't have to worry about petty things like evidence or truth. After all, such minor details never bothered any politician.
What It Says Sunil Dev Said: Betting on cricket takes place heavily in India. It is in place for about 10 years. It has assumed large proportion since the introduction of one-day games. There is heavier betting on one-day matches because they are result oriented. I cannot identify any particular player who bets on cricket but I am fairly certain that members of the team do lay a bet and one can only bet to lose.
What It Said He Also Said: And, when it comes to India, they would be betting on a certainty anyway.
What It Says: The incidents mentioned in clause (c) and (d) above are couched in a language which is beautifully vague.
What It Also Said: Such language may be replicated for future reports on the state of match-fixing vis-à-vis Indian cricket.
