And The Award Goes To...

It's that time of year again-time for Jaal's annual sporting awards:Shock of the Year (India-I): Losing to Bangladesh in the second ODI on December 26 at Dhaka. Shock of the Year (India-II): The BCCI election fiasco which made Indian cricket a worldwide laughing stock. Shock of the Year (India-III): The shocking death of Brazilian footballer Junior while representing Dempo (Goa) in Bangalore-and the disgraceful blame-game that followed the tragedy. Shock of the Year (International-II): That lunatic who ran onto the road in Athens and blocked the path of Brazilian runner Vanderlei de Silva who was leading the Marathon at the Olympics at the time. Shock of the Year (International-II): The doping scandals in athletics which claimed big names worldwide. Shlock of the Year: The sleazy 'Shaz and Waz' show on ESPN-Star which has two middle-aged cricketers leching away at young girls who are picked through SMS polling in some sort of bizarre electronic cattle mart. Just a continuation of the tawdriness that has crept into Indian cricket telecasting since the 2003 World Cup. Pleasant Surprise of the Year (India-I): Indian winning both the ODI and Test series in Pakistan for the first time. Pleasant Surprise of the Year (India-II): Irfan Pathan emerging as a genuine all-round talent just when India needs one. Pleasant Surprise of the Year (India-III): S Sharath Kumar winning the Commonwealth Table Tennis men's championships-the first major TT gold medal by an Indian. Comeback of the Year (India): Anil Kumble's second coming-top wicket taker of 2004. Comeback of the Year (International): Golfer Vijay Singh emerging as the world's best-two decades after being banned from the international circuit. Indian Sportsman of the Year: Shooter Maj RVS Rathore for providing the silver lining after yet another dismal performance by India at the Olympics. Indian Sportswoman of the Year: Long jumper Anju Bobby George, also at Athens. Though she finished sixth in the finals, at least Anju managed to improve her personal best. International Sportsman of the Year (joint winners): Germany's Michael Schumacher for his utter domination of Formula-I (13 wins out of 16 races); American cyclist Lance Armstrong for making it six-in-a-row in the Tour de France; Swiss Roger Federer, winner of three of the four Grand Slams and for bringing touch and grace back to men's tennis. International Sportswoman of the Year (joint winners): Two Russians, Maria Sharapova for her stunning success at Wimbledon and pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva for setting the only track and field world record at the Olympics. Zeroes of the Year (India) : A no-contest-our useless sports officials have a permanent grip on this 'award'. From cricket to football and hockey to the Olympics, they managed to make fools of themselves in particular and Indian sport in general. Zeroes of the Year (International): The Australian cricket team-one of the best of all time. But they claim the 'award' for being the sporting world's number one hypocrites and sore losers. Special Mentions of the Year: Brian Lara becoming the first cricketer to score 400 in a Test match; Sachin Tendulkar equaling Sunil Gavaskar's world record of 34 Test centuries. Happy New Year!
